We have all fallen victim to the tyranny of the urgent at some point in our lives. We prioritise what seems urgent over what is truly important.
yet, even as we work diligently, fast forward a few days/weeks/months, and there’s often no sense of real progress.
The main reason is that it’s easier to justify and argue for addressing “what is urgent” while figuring out and building a business case for “what is important” is more challenging.
at Checkmate & Connect, we developed the CheckmateMethod to address this issue, among others.
As you decide how much time and resources to allocate to any goal, we encourage you to consider two key questions:
1. Who is your king? – What is the one thing you absolutely cannot afford to lose in pursuit of your goal? Losing this means game over.
2. Who is your enemy king? – What is the one obstacle or challenge you must defeat to succeed? Without overcoming this, the best outcome is a prolonged stalemate.
Life is similar to a chess game: it ends in a loss if your king is dead, it ends in a win if you capture the enemy’s king, and it ends in a draw if neither king is dead.
We also use the chessboard to map out strategies and model other variables, but I’ll keep it brief. If you’re interested, feel free to reach out to learn more about the Checkmate Method!
